Jennifer’s Journey
I arrived at Transplant House on June 13, just days after receiving a heart transplant on June 1, 2024. While here, my mom and 5-month-old daughter are at Transplant House with me. I am only halfway through my stay, and I’m already dreading the day we leave because of how the Transplant House team has made everything as convenient as possible.
After giving birth to my fifth child, my heart suddenly started to fail. I was diagnosed with postpartum cardiomyopathy. Despite two months of the best available medications, my condition didn’t improve. I was told I needed to get to Seattle immediately. I drove to a nearby hospital and was flown to UW Medical Center, where doctors told me I wouldn’t be leaving without a new heart.
Being so far from home—with my husband and 4 children over three hours away—I was facing an incredibly difficult time. But everything changed once I was introduced to Transplant House. My case manager helped arrange a room, and my mom moved in two days before I was discharged from the hospital. She got us settled, stocked our apartment kitchen, and prepared the space so I could focus on recovery.
The team at Transplant House has made this journey so much easier. Everyone is friendly, helpful, and quick to answer our questions. The shared communal kitchen is perfect for visiting with friends and family without needing to host inside our apartment. While my family visited, my son loved playing pool in the Game Room with his uncle. My older daughters and I enjoyed working on puzzles in the Library. My 5-year-old and I would gather together and play with Play-Doh. There’s always something to do—from Transplant House staff and volunteers hosting Game Nights and Ice Cream socials to finding Waldo and playing shuffleboard.
I feel safe here, even when taking Savannah for an evening stroll indoors. I appreciate the attention to cleanliness—wipes are available everywhere, and sanitizer bottles are always full. We appreciate TH staff being willing to make small adjustments to customize our apartment for our needs like having an ottoman removed to fit a pack ’n play and A/C unit. Everything has been made as convenient and comfortable as possible.
